Wednesday was not a good day in this country; it was quite dark, actually.
Conservative activist and podcaster, as well as the founding member of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk was assassinated. That news wound up drowning out another school shooting that occurred in Colorado.
Police have been stumped this far regarding Kirk's killing, but authorities have had their first break, recovering the weapon used in the shooting.
Before I get into the meat of this report, I wanted to talk about the misinformation that is being put out there right now because it is maddening, quite frankly.
I watched a profiler on Fox News float the theory of this being the work of a contract killer. That led to conspiracy theories about the murder being an inside job, as videos were going viral of Kirk’s security team touching their hats and arms as a “go” signal for the shooting.
This is all speculation by people who are looking for likes and clicks, literally trying to cash in on Kirk’s death, spinning everything possible in the hope they are right and can make a name for themselves.
This is all speculation, and most of it is complete and utter nonsense, as the fact remains that we don’t really know all that much just yet.
First, police have recovered what they believe to be the weapon used to assassinate Kirk, and make no mistake about it, this was indeed an assassination.
FBI Special Agent Robert Bowles also revealed that authorities have their first real clue about the suspect.
Bowles noted that they have recovered palm prints and footprints from the suspected killer. They have a brief description of the individual, but they are in possession of more than 100 videos and photos of the alleged shooter on the rooftop, as well as when he was escaping the scene.
Reports broke this morning that there were messages on the gun and/or ammunition used to kill Kirk, but as I am writing this, authorities have not revealed the content of those messages, so any claims at this point are nothing more than speculation.
I have to admit, these words are not easy for me to write, as I am furious about this assassination, and I was far from a loyal fan of Kirk’s.
I respected Kirk because he had conviction like nothing I have seen for someone of his age as a conservative. He talked about difficult subjects and did so fearlessly. While I agreed with most of his points, I did not always agree with his presentation, but that is a product of today’s social media culture.
This was about someone silencing free speech. The killer just did not like what Charlie was saying, so he was silenced, and it is horrifying to someone like me who gets paid to put his opinion on paper for others to read.
I am angry, as I am sure you are, but we all need to take a breath and wait until authorities have the investigation completed before drawing any conclusions or buying into a conspiracy theory. I have always vowed to tell my readers the truth, and right now, the truth is that we just don’t know. We all have our suspicions, and we are all angry, heartbroken, disgusted, and a dozen other adjectives. But just remember, nothing good ever comes when you act on emotion. Just take a breath… that is all I am asking anyone who reads these pages.
