Regardless of what we think we know, there is nothing more important than actual physical DNA evidence to convict a murderer.
The FBI had plenty of video evidence showing the suspect in the area at the time of Charlie Kirk's shooting, but that alone would not have been enough.
Now, the FBI has reportedly found DNA evidence that should make this an open-and-shut case against Kirk’s assassin.
There were a lot of theories being thrown around by media personalities after Kirk was assassinated, and virtually every one of them was wrong.
The only suggestion I saw that was remotely in the ballpark was that made by retired FBI Special Agent James R. Fitzgerald, who believed the shooter was likely someone who had been upset by Kirk, and he even mentioned possible ties to the transgender community.
As the week progressed, the idea that the shooter was a professional or had been hired had been utterly destroyed, proving Fitzgerald right.
Surveillance photos of the alleged shooter surfaced, and he appeared to be a young man. And while he had clearly done reconnaissance before the shooting, this very much appeared to be a lone wolf who happened to make an exceptionally difficult shot.
In cases such as this, amateurs always make mistakes and are often their own worst enemies.
I again go back to the profile offered by Fitzgerald, who speculated that the shooter may have already spoken about the incident to people, or had possibly given some signals to family or friends about what he had planned.
In this case, the alleged shooter (no, I will not use his name and give him more fame) had reportedly sent a message to friends, joking that his “doppelganger” had committed the assassination of Kirk.
This is typical of what we have seen in the past with amateurs, who cannot stand the fact that they pulled off their attack and nobody knew it was them. Subconsciously, he needed the recognition.
FBI Director Kash Patel has been taking criticism for early stumbles during the investigation, but I think that is a bit unfair. It is not exactly uncommon for police to be pointed in an inaccurate direction. Patel should actually be applauded for realizing they had the wrong person in custody and quickly moving on.
Patel has now announced that the FBI found DNA evidence that will link the suspect to the weapon used in the shooting, as well as other items at the scene.
He stated, “I can report today that the DNA hits from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA from the screwdriver are positively processed for the suspect in custody.”
The suspect is reportedly not cooperating with authorities, which is not wise for someone in his situation. I honestly think Attorney General Pam Bondi wants him to go this route so that there is no incentive to offer him a deal. I believe she will go for the death penalty to try to dial down the rise in political violence we see in this country.
