Donald Trump is about to unleash the powers of the federal government in another large American city.
Trump has been successful with his crime crackdown D.C., and while he has seen resistance in other cities, we are seeing some positive feedback in terms of lower rates of violent crime and successful rounding up of illegal immigrants.
The Department of Homeland Security has just announced its next target for such enforcement actions… New Orleans.
When Trump federalized D.C., the entire left just about lost its mind, with the exception being Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser.
While she initially put up a little bit of a fight, it almost seemed as though she was relieved to be getting some help to address the violent crime in the city.
That was not the case with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which fought the federalization and ripped Trump for using “false pretenses” to come into the capital city.
They could all complain as much as they wanted, but Trump got results, and violent crimes dropped rather dramatically, with authorities achieving a long spell without any homicides in the city. One of the most heavily impacted crime categories was that of carjacking, all but disappearing during the federalization.
After the success that Trump had in D.C., he started to branch out to other cities, whether their leaders wanted it or not.
Federal agents swarmed in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Memphis, and Portland to help local police fight violent crime and round up illegal immigrants.
Some local community leaders said the efforts were a bit much, but I also saw plenty of residents in these same cities posting on social media and applauding Trump’s efforts. And the president was clearly more concerned about what those people thought than he was about what the local politicians thought.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson explained, "Making America Safe Again -- especially crime-ridden cities -- was a key campaign promise from the President that the American people elected him to fulfill.”
That brings us to New Orleans, which poses an interesting scenario because there we have a Democrat mayor who will resist Trump and a Republican governor who would love to have the help.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin explained, “Sanctuary policies endanger American communities by releasing illegal criminal aliens and forcing DHS law enforcement to risk their lives to remove criminal illegal aliens that should have never been put back on the streets.”
Trump claimed that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry asked him for help, explaining, “Gov. Landry -- a great guy, a great governor -- he’s asked for help in New Orleans. And we’re going to go there in a couple of weeks.”
With all the fraud recently revealed to be plaguing Minnesota, it was also announced this week that DHS will be launching an operation in Minneapolis to target illegal Somali immigrants.
