There is nothing more entertaining in politics than seeing someone invoke a high-profile name, only to use the wrong picture.
I have seen it happen more than once, and this time it was a California Democrat who claims she was endorsed by Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), the new golden child of the Democrat Party.
Esther Kim Varet had posted the endorsement by Crockett on her website, but she had the picture of a different black woman featured in the post.
Crockett has been getting plenty of ink since moving up to Congress from the Texas state legislature, but nothing like she started to get since announcing she was making a run for the Senate.
The lawmaker is making herself out to be a bad orange man slayer, stating, “For most of us, a Republican-controlled Texas is all we've known. But we cannot let that diminish our faith and belief in what can be.”
After Crockett announced, Colin Allred dropped out, then Crockett immediately rose to the top of polling against Texas state Rep. James Talarico, who had been dominating to that point.
However, when it comes to polling against the GOP candidates, Talarico was initially polling better. Not to mention, everyone gets a boost after they announce, so let’s give this a month or so to settle down before we crown Crockett the new queen of Democrats in the Lone Star State.
Crockett is a hot ticket right now, and everyone is getting on board, including the National Urban League, which has dubbed her “the voice of a new generation.”
Marc H. Morial, the president and CEO of the National Urban League (NUL), just wrote a piece on the organization’s website gushing over Crockett.
In part, he stated, “We are living through a moment that demands clarity, resolve, and truth. Across this country, communities are calling for leadership that understands the stakes, challenges the status quo, and delivers for those most often left behind.”
His post continued, “In Texas, that leadership has a name: Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.”
With all that attention, it is no wonder that Varet wanted to let everyone know that Crockett was behind her campaign, only her move completely backfired when it became apparent she had posted the wrong picture to the endorsement.
After the mistake was discovered, the GOP pounced, with Christian Martinez, national Hispanic press secretary for the National Republican Congressional Committee, commenting on X, “Racist. Arrogant. Totally out of touch. Good thing @estherkimvaret’s hate-filled, bigoted self isn’t getting anywhere near Congress.”
The rhetoric on the post is not just associated with a bad picture being posted, as Varet had mocked Rep. Young Kim (R-CA), the incumbent of the seat that Varet is trying to win. Varet had made fun of Kim’s English-speaking abilities. Kim had responded to the dig, “I’m proud of my accent and will keep using my voice to protect the American dream for future generations.”
Varet has also targeted Martinez, telling him that he needs to prove he is actually Latino. These are all things that would have ruined a Republican candidate, but we will see how Democrats treat someone who definitely exhibits the undertones of a racist. Crockett’s office, by the way, has not yet commented on the picture error made by Varet’s campaign.
