Democrats have turned the heat up on Republicans regarding voter ID with the 2026 midterm election now in full swing.
Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) both recently did interviews equating this to voter suppression, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) even equating the laws to Jim Crow laws.
If all that is true, then why was Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) requiring a valid government ID to attend a recent campaign event and not just taking people’s word for it?
The GOP wants to have the SAVE Act passed, but I think Republicans would probably be happy with any voter ID law that simply required a valid government ID to be shown before casting a vote.
When Jeffries was asked about voter ID, he stated, "The question is that what Republicans are trying to do is to engage in clear and blatant voter suppression. They know that if there‘s a free and fair election in November, they‘re going to lose. In fact, Republicans have been losing every single election since Donald Trump was sworn in January of last year, including most recently, decisively in Texas.”
He continued, “And of course, losing all across the country up and down the ballot in the November off-year elections in places like New Jersey or Virginia [or] New York."
Well, Democrats just crushed it in Virginia, which has voter ID laws in place, so there is that.
The good senator from California took the same approach on voter ID laws, even when it was pointed out that 83% of all Americans, including more than 70% of Democrats, support some sort of voter ID laws.
He told ABC’s Jonathan Karl, "Jonathan, what you've just asked is essentially: Republicans have created distrust in the elections by making claims of nonexistent fraud in the elections, and shouldn't we use the distrust they've created in order to enact a voter suppression law, which is the SAVE Act, which would require people to have a birth certificate or passport — documents that millions of Americans don't have.”
He continued, “Almost half the country doesn't have a passport, and I don't know where many millions of people would even find a birth certificate.”
You don’t need a passport, and if you don’t have a Social Security card, you can get one fairly easily, the same with a birth certificate. He is making people out to be morons to avoid passing a common-sense law.
Sen. Ossoff held a campaign event this weekend, and an email was sent to attendees that they needed to have a government-issued ID that matched the name on the reservation, or they would not be given entry to the event.
Now, this is just a campaign event, not a vote, yet he has stricter rules for his event than are needed to walk into a polling station. Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), who is running for the Georgia seat, stated, “Typical Jon Ossoff to say one thing and do another.”
He continued, “It’s ridiculous that Jon Ossoff would require a government ID to listen to him speak about why you shouldn’t need a government ID to vote.”
This is far from the first time that we have seen Democrats require ID to attend their events, and it surely won’t be the last. I would love to hear how Ossoff can defend this policy, but his office has yet to respond to any requests on the subject.
