It is not often you hear a former Bush official talk nicely about Trump, as the former president's allies and current administration officials are usually quite far apart.
The one thing everyone can agree upon, however, is that Iran cannot be permitted to have a nuclear weapon.
That being the case, it is great to see former Bush officials who have blasted Trump in the past sticking up for him on these recent strikes.
The strikes against Iran were carried out flawlessly.
Somehow, this administration was able to keep the strike a complete secret, with not a single leak giving Iran a heads up that our bombers were headed their way.
A strike of this magnitude, with our bombers in the air for roughly 37 hours, takes massive coordination and cooperation from numerous countries, which makes the silence all the more impressive.
As assessments are coming in, it would appear, at the very least, Trump has set the nuclear capabilities of Iran back several years, which gives Trump enormous leverage when it comes to negotiating peace between Israel and Iran, as well as a deal to block Iran from moving forward with its nuclear plans.
While there are some Democrats who supported the strike, there is a significant contingent who believe Trump overstepped his bounds here.
AOC and Rep. Al Green (D-TX) were leading the charge, with Green putting forth an effort to have Trump impeached over the strikes.
Their outrage was nothing but theater, however, as every president we have had in modern history has ordered similar precision strikes in the name of protecting both the United States and the world from a threat.
This was not an act of war, which even Iran knew. The country ordered a counterstrike, literally notifying the United States of where and when to ensure nobody was killed, then called it all even.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, an official from the George W. Bush administration, has not exactly been a fan of Trump in the past, but she definitely approved of this strike.
Rice stated, “We will eventually know precisely how much the Iranian program was damaged, but I think all of the evidence is that it was substantially, significantly damaged to the place that, for a while at least, it will be hard to build a nuclear weapon.”
She later added, “Credibility is not something that you establish one day and then you sort of dial it in and say it’s done. We have to keep establishing that the United States is going to try and shape the international system, not just be a victim of it. But what’s happened in the last couple of days is very, very good for American credibility.”
In the past, both Democrats and Republicans have supported the sitting president in this type of situation, but the rules changed with Trump in office. So, it is truly great to see some Democrats and the anti-Trump contingent of Republicans rally behind Trump to show that this was, in fact, the right call.
