Emil Bove barely makes it out of committee as judicial nomination hangs in balance

I think we all knew that if Donald Trump was elected president, he was going to be repaying members of his personal legal team with prime administration appointments.

One of the key players on Trump’s defense team was Emil Bove, who is now about to attempt a double-dip as part of the current administration.

Bove had already been serving as a top Trump legal adviser, but now he is up for a lifetime judicial appointment, and he is seeing some resistance from both sides of the aisle.

Fighting back against Bove

When Trump nominated Bove for a judicial appointment, Democrats and the left went nuclear.

For instance, Demand Justice, a leftist group associated with members of the liberal House "Squad," stated, “Let’s speak plainly: Emil Bove is being nominated to a circuit court seat because of his proven loyalty to Trump. Bove has demonstrated time and time again his willingness to use his position to advance even the most dangerous and extreme actions of this administration."

Demand Justice continued, “Trump’s actions since returning to office–including attacks on judges, defiance of court orders, and now this nomination -- have demonstrated his disregard for our rule of law. Now, however, all eyes must turn to the Senate.

The group continued, “Any member of that chamber that purports to respect our system of governance must reject this nominee as antithetical to the foundational values of our nation and our courts.”

Booker's temper tantrum

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) has gained a reputation as a bit of a drama queen since Trump took office, grabbing headlines for his filibustering and now for a temper tantrum he threw about Bove.

Booked joined Democrats in walking out of a Senate Judiciary hearing, stating, “I don’t understand this. What are you afraid of, about even debating this, putting things on the record, hearing from every senator?”

His rage against Republican members of the panel continued, “Dear God. That’s what our obligations are … There’s no need to rush this."

Booker continued, “You are obligated to address a point of order according to the rules of this committee. You can overrule me by a Senate vote. You’re violating your own rules.”

Seeing resistance

Bove made it out of committee with only a single vote to spare, as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) stood in opposition to the nomination.

While Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) voted to advance Bove out of committee, she stated that she will vote to block his nomination in the final floor vote.

That would mean that Bove only has one more vote to spare. If that happens, Vice President JD Vance will have to break the tie to get him approved.

Any more defections than that, and Bove’s nomination will crash and burn, and you had better believe that Trump will go ballistic, as this is one appointment in which the president has a very personal interest in seeing go through.
