Former West Coast Eagles star Mark Hutchings revealed that his partner, Hannah, died suddenly just two days after giving birth to their daughter, leaving the 35-year-old to raise a newborn alone.
Hutchings broke the news on Instagram, sharing a photo of himself standing beside a pregnant Hannah alongside a message that laid bare the scale of his loss. The former AFL midfielder, who played all 120 of his career games for the West Coast Eagles and won a premiership with the club in 2018, described himself as "shattered."
Hannah's cause of death has not been disclosed. Hutchings called the loss "sudden," and no medical or circumstantial details have been made public. Her last name was not included in the New York Post's report.
In his Instagram post, Hutchings wrote about the cruel timing, a new life arriving days before a devastating loss.
"It is with deep sadness that I share the sudden loss of my beautiful partner, Hannah. 2 days following the birth of our daughter, Sofia. I am shattered. Her dream was to become a Mum, so it's been incredibly difficult to take."
He added a direct message to Hannah in the same post.
"Thank you for all of your messages of support, I can't always reply to them all but I do appreciate them. Sofia and I love you and will miss you very much Hannah."
The couple is believed to have started dating in 2023. Hutchings retired from professional football the following year. No exact dates for Sofia's birth or Hannah's death have been made public.
The post drew an immediate wave of condolences from the West Coast Eagles community. Former teammate Jack Darling wrote, "Love you Hutchy, always here for you." Darling's wife, Courtney, added her own message: "Been thinking of you everyday Hutch, no words will ever be enough. Praying for you and your beautiful Sofia."
