If you thought this was going to be a dull week, think again.
No sooner had Kilmar Abrego Garcia been released from jail by what the Trump administration is calling an activist judge, he was arrested by ICE.
According to local reports, Garcia was arrested during his required check-in at the Baltimore, Maryland, office.
Initially, the Trump administration refused to bring Garcia back to the United States after his initial deportation to El Salvador, even after the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled that he should be returned.
Attorney General Pam Bondi now appears to have stalled until the DOJ could find something to charge him with, and she succeeded.
After a video surfaced of a traffic stop from years prior, and past reports on Garcia's conduct were revealed, he was charged with, among other crimes, human trafficking (this was directly related to the aforementioned traffic stop).
Bondi stated at the time of the immigrant's prior return to the U.S., “We're grateful to President Bukele for agreeing to return [Garcia] to our country to face these very serious charges. This is what American justice looks like.”
On Friday, it was announced that a magistrate judge had ordered Garcia to be released from jail in Tennessee.
He had been in custody there since June, when El Salvador returned him to the United States to face the charges presented by Bondi and the DOJ.
Garcia stated, "Today has been a very special day because I have seen my family for the first time in more than 160 days. I’d like to thank all the people who have supported me because after this long time I have witnessed that so many people have been by my side with such positivity."
That feeling would not last for long.
Garcia had a couple of days to enjoy his newfound freedom, but that was it, as authorities from ICE took him back into custody this morning.
In the judge’s release order, authorities were told they could keep him under electronic surveillance and ICE supervision while he awaited trial, but he was not supposed to be deported, an order that border czar Tom Homan appeared ready to defy.
ICE has already sent Garcia’s attorney a notice that he will be deported to Uganda, another country that recently reached a deal with the United States to accept illegal immigrants. Homan confirmed the report, stating, "He is absolutely going to be deported.”
I would imagine this will be immediately challenged in court, as liberal groups seem intent on keeping this man in the country, regardless of the crimes of which he has been accused by authorities. Garcia's case will continue to be the rallying cry for Democrats who are trying to paint Trump as an out-of-control authoritarian.
