When Donald Trump announced that he was tearing down the East Wing of the White House to build a ballroom, you would have thought he dropped a nuclear bomb.
The outrage from the left was ridiculous, and this, of course, included criticism from former first lady Michelle Obama, who has always seemed to hate the White House but now claims to be sentimentally attached to it.
Well, Trump just gave Mrs. Obama a piece of his mind.
When Trump initially stated that he was going to build the ballroom, he described it as an addition to the East Wing, not a replacement for it.
Trump later asserted that for the ballroom to be constructed properly, it was necessary to demolish the old East Wing and build in its existing spot.
Personally, I thought this was all a cover story for a plan to update the presidential bunker, which is located directly below the East Wing, given that a similar rationale was once offered for previous upgrades to the security structure.
The bunker has been in place since the 1940s, so this just seemed logical to me, but again, that was always speculation on my part.
Virtually every Democrat in existence went ballistic upon hearing the news about the East Wing, as if the White House had never been renovated before. And let’s be honest, if Joe Biden had announced such a plan, Dems would be talking about how wonderful an idea it was.
Michelle Obama joined in on the liberal outrage, stating, “When we talk about the East Wing, it is the heart of the work.”
She continued, “And to denigrate it, to tear it down, to pretend like it doesn’t matter -- it’s a reflection of how you think of that role.”
Mind you, this is coming from the wife of a man who turned the tennis courts into basketball courts so he could play hoops, and nobody on the left ever said a word about it.
Trump hit back against the criticism, stating, "That building was renovated 20 times, including adding a floor to the top, which was terrible. It looked like hell. It had nothing to do with the original building, and I didn't want to sacrifice a great ballroom for an okay ballroom by leaving it right smack in the middle."
The president further stated, "The East Wing is being spent by private donors. It's a $250, $300 million building. It's going to be the most beautiful anywhere in the world.”
He added, "They had an event [at the White House] the other day. With tables, they could hold 79 people. Now, if you have President Xi from China, or if you have some big state event, we have no place to have it. You know what they did? …They will put a tent on the lawn. It was a low section because that's the only section you have… If it rained, you were sitting in six inches of water. It was a disaster."
I just don’t have a problem with what Trump is doing, and I would not have had a problem if a Democrat were in office doing the same thing. The White House itself is still standing, so let’s not get emotional over a part of the building that has not even been in place for a century. And trust me, when the ballroom is done, you had better believe that the Democrats will be using it once they reclaim the presidency.
