Trump gets back in the shutdown fight

Yesterday, I wrote a report about the genius move from Donald Trump to stay out of the government shutdown battle.

I also noted that I knew he was champing at the bit to get involved again, so I wondered how long that silence would last.

Well, it was just a few hours after that report hit that Trump decided to go off on the subject, demanding that Democrats end their holdout.

Staying quiet

Political columnist Kristin Tate commented on how Trump’s silence was beneficial to his cause.

She wrote, "By staying relatively quiet right now, President Trump is allowing Democrats to ‘own’ the shutdown.”

She continued, "By maintaining a low profile, Trump is allowing the public to see how the Democrats are acting. The Democrats will ultimately bear most of the political consequences of the shutdown."

But again, this is Trump, and we all know that he needs to be at the center of everything, so it was only a matter of time before he broke his silence.

Trump slams Democrats

To be honest, I was hesitant to even write that report yesterday, knowing that the clock was ticking on Trump’s silence, which he broke on Monday night.

Trump posted to Truth Social, "Democrats have SHUT DOWN the United States Government right in the midst of one of the most successful Economies, including a Record Stock Market, that our Country has ever had. This has sadly affected so many programs, services, and other elements of Society that Americans rely on — And it should not have happened.”

He continued, "I am happy to work with the Democrats on their Failed Healthcare Policies, or anything else, but first they must allow our Government to re-open. In fact, they should open our Government tonight!"

Democrats are likely not to cave until they get at least one concession, but Trump has to know there is growing support among Republicans to keep Obamacare subsidies in place, so he wants this standoff to end as soon as possible.

Growing dissent

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is quickly becoming a problem for Trump, and she has been ever since she was snubbed for a Cabinet position. She has been outspokenly opposed to several of Trump's policies, and now she is hitting the administration on the shutdown.

Greene wants to see the tax credits left in for Obamacare, stating, “But I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE, along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district.”

She later added, “No I’m not towing the party line on this, or playing loyalty games. I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any tax payer funded healthcare or benefits. I’m AMERICA ONLY!!!”

If insurance premiums skyrocket next year, the GOP has no chance of holding the House in the midterms, so I really don’t see why we are even arguing about the subsidies at this point. Believe me, I would love to see Obamacare dismantled, as that is what sent premiums through the roof in the first place, but until another system is put in play, this is what we have, and if we don’t have those tax credits, most of us are going to get buried. If you don’t want this in the CR, then create legislation to address it separately and pass it immediately. Do that, and Democrats have no reason to allow the shutdown to continue.
