Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi hit with ethics complaint over alleged Stock Act violation

The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has found yet another potential violation of the law on the part of a lawmaker.

According to FACT, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) did not properly disclose some of his stock transactions.

Sadly, he is far from the only Democrat who has found himself in trouble lately.

Looking for indictments

The Trump administration has been going after quite a few people who gave the president problems during the period between his two administrations.

At the top of that list is New York Attorney General Letitia James, who was referred to the Justice Department for alleged mortgage fraud.

Prosecutors have had the information for about five months now, but they have yet to make a firm enough case for the grand jury to hand up an indictment, which could ultimately create some PR problems for Trump and Republicans if James goes uncharged.

While the DOJ has struggled with that case, there are a few others worth mentioning.

Superintendent arrested

One of the more shocking arrests I saw recently was the arrest of the Des Moines, Iowa school superintendent.

Ian Andre Roberts reportedly overstayed his student visa from 1999. Not only is he an illegal immigrant, but he was also a registered voter with an “active” status in Maryland. Somehow, he even managed to land the superintendent's job in the Des Moines Public Schools system despite his shaky legal standing. Keep in mind, as an illegal immigrant, he is not permitted to work, so how were all of these facts overlooked?

ICE arrested Roberts about a week ago, at which point it was also reported that he had been arrested on an illegal weapons charge in 2020 and received a final removal order in 2024, but yet there he was, peacocking as the superintendent of a large school system.

After his arrest, Jackie Norris, chair of the school board, announced, "We were notified that the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners revoked Doctor Roberts' license to practice as a superintendent in the state of Iowa. Without such a license, Doctor Roberts is not in compliance with his contract.”

The Stock Act

That brings us to our friend from New Hampshire, who just found himself the target of a FACT investigation, and now an ethics complaint has been filed.

According to the complaint by FACT, Suozzi purchased Treasury bills but had not reported them for nearly a year, stating, “While any violation of this law is serious, this case is even more so given that Suozzi has failed to file periodic transaction reports for hundreds of stock transactions in the past and appeared hostile to his duty to do so while being investigated.”

The statement continued, “Thus, it is clear Suozzi has extensive knowledge of the law and his duty to comply with it, but despite his prior assurances to adhere to it, he is not.”

The sad reality is that the Ethics Committee will likely let him off with nothing more than a warning because we generally have corrupt politicians investigating other corrupt politicians. This is something that really needs to be addressed, as we need something more than a harsh letter or a censure when politicians break laws such as these. Otherwise, this blatant law-breaking will never end.
