Donald Trump was supposed to have a meeting with Democrat leaders at the White House today.
They were going to discuss funding that those on the left wanted to see in the spending bill.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) started to feel themselves a bit, so Trump wound up canceling the meeting, all but daring them to shut down the government.
The government shutdown deadline is about a week away, so Trump agreed to meet with Democrat leaders to discuss funding possibilities.
Schumer and Jeffries had been demanding a meeting with the president, so he finally gave them an audience.
Trump stated, “I’d love to meet with them, but I don’t think it’s going to have any impact.”
Democrats are focusing on health care spending, wanting to see subsidies left in place that are about to expire, as well as canceling the Medicaid “cuts” that were put in place in the last spending bill.
I have often said that Trump and Republicans can be their own worst enemy, but Democrats really are no better.
Schumer has been chirping in the media all week, pretending to be the tough guy who will stand up to Trump, and we all know that when you grandstand against this president, he will cut off his note to spite his face if it means shutting you down.
To that point, Trump canceled the meeting, stating that the demands being voiced by Democrats were "unserious and ridiculous demands.”
Trump added, "I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive.”
I really don’t think Trump cares one way or another about the prospect of a shutdown because the GOP is ready to put the entire debacle on the Dems.
Schumer doesn’t seem to get it, and he started chirping again, stating, “Trump is running away from the negotiating table before he even gets there. While Americans face rising costs and a Republican healthcare crisis, Trump would rather throw a tantrum than do his job. Democrats are ready to work to avoid a shutdown -- Trump and Republicans are holding America hostage. Donald Trump will own the shutdown.”
Jeffries added, “Trump Always Chickens Out. Donald Trump just cancelled a high-stakes meeting in the Oval Office with myself and Leader Schumer. The extremists want to shut down the government because they are unwilling to address the Republican healthcare crisis that is devastating America.”
This is not about anything other than showboating, so I say shut it down and let the chips fall where they may. I am so sick of this political theater, so, like Trump, there is just no way I would give in to Democrats because they surely would not say it was a great bipartisan discussion, but instead paint it as the president having caved. There is no win here for Trump to give them anything, so he shouldn't do it.
