Thought of the Day

The current age of judicial activism brings to light a quote from the amazing U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who stated:

"The Constitution that I interpret and apply is not living but dead, or as I prefer to call it, enduring. It means today not what current society, much less the court, thinks it ought to mean, but what it meant when it was adopted."

As a constitutionalist, I support that premise, and I think judges who believe that the Constitution should be an ever-evolving document are the reason we have so many activist judges, including at least two members of the current Supreme Court. Far too many judges try to think about how our Founders would have interpreted today's facts rather than about the words they put to paper when they founded this country. The real threat to our republic… those who try to adapt the Constitution to modern times rather than strictly applying it to the question at hand. The latter, my friends, is how we follow the rule of law.
