The gruesome murder of a Ukrainian refugee on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, has gotten the attention of the entire nation.
The alleged killer has a long history of violent crime and had been released on no-cash bail after a previous arrest.
Even the accused's family members are saying that he should not have been on the streets, and now President Donald Trump is calling for the death penalty in the case to deter more violent crimes like this in the future.
Tuesday was primary election day in many states across the nation, and after Charlotte’s mayor asked for empathy for the alleged killer, many thought it would kill her chances at the polls.
Well, Mayor Vi Lyles received 70.75% of the vote, dominating the field in her primary race, with the next closest candidate netting 12.19% of the vote.
Lyles is the first Black female mayor of the city, and she will face off against Republican Terrie Donavan, who has already stated that fighting crime is her top issue, making that point clear even before the recent killing.
The city is dominated by Democrats, who always seem to vote like zombies, as was the case in 2023, when Lyles won 74% of the vote in the general election, and even amid this gruesome murder and the mayor's tone-deaf response, the results are likely to be similar in the 2025 election.
The alleged killer has been arrested more than a dozen times, and he has a long history of mental health issues, into which we will delve further below.
The chances of the death penalty being imposed in this case are almost nil, because the suspect's attorneys will likely use mental incapacity as a defense strategy. However, Trump is still calling for capital punishment to be applied in this case.
Trump stated, "The ANIMAL who so violently killed the beautiful young lady from Ukraine, who came to America searching for peace and safety, should be given a ‘Quick’ (there is no doubt!) Trial, and only awarded THE DEATH PENALTY. There can be no other option!"
The mental health issue here is going to play a huge role in how this trial and sentencing play out. While I agree with Trump's sentiment and would love to see death sentences carried out quicker, I just don't see it being used here.
Several family members of the alleged killer, Decarlos Brown Jr., have already come forward to work the mental health angle.
His sister, Tracey Brown, whom her brother had also previously attacked, stated that he killed Iryna Zarutska because he thought she was reading his mind. She added, “A person that is hearing voices in their head and believes the world is against them, they’re going to break. And I think that night he broke.”
His brother Jeremiah did not defend the suspect's actions, but believed he never should have been on the street, stating, "I didn’t even know he had mental problems…You can’t just let him walk free especially because of mental issues. He could do it again. They should still treat him for his mental issues but there are consequences for his actions. I think he should suffer the consequences."
This is a dual failure on the part of the system that is currently in place. First, given his many prior arrests, this man never should have been walking the streets freely. Second, he clearly had mental issues, so why was he not institutionalized? If either of those aspects of the “system” were working properly, the young lady on the train would be alive today. Instead, her last moments on this earth were filled with panic, terror, and the desperate realization that her life was about to end at the age of 23 in a country to which she fled to feel safe.
