Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has been a clear adversary to Donald Trump throughout his immigration enforcement push.
Today, voters in Wu's city will decide if she will be the Democratic Party nominee for re-election.
While man-on-the-street interviews show a lot of frustration with the situation in Boston, Wu continues to enjoy an absurdly high approval rating and is likely to walk right into the nomination she seeks.
Attorney General Pam Bondi has threatened all sanctuary cities, which include Boston, saying that the federal government would withhold funding if they did not cooperate with ICE.
As I have stated many times, this is an empty threat because once congressional funds are approved and signed off on, they must be dispensed, although an administration can freeze them for a very limited time.
The only way this situation changes is if the U.S. Supreme Court takes a sanctuary city case and rules on the overall legality of the concept itself.
Most of the cities included in Bondi's threat simply failed to respond to the AG, but Wu chose to hold a press conference and call out the DOJ and the Trump administration.
Wu did not hold back, stating, "At a time when this federal administration is already causing so much fear and harm in our communities, these threats are serious and consequential.”
She continued, "Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration's failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law… You are wrong on the law, and you are wrong on safety."
Wu then cited the city’s role in the American Revolution, stating, "We are gathered here today to show you who we are in Boston. More than 100 years before your home state was founded, Bostonians were across the street in Faneuil Hall, setting the foundation for our democracy and rule of law. One hundred years before that, Bostonians were founding the first public school and public park in the country."
The media and liberals ate it up, and the timing was perfect for Wu's re-election campaign.
Today is primary day in Boston, and we are going to see how voters there feel about Wu’s progressive policies.
As I noted in previous reports, I recently spent time in Boston, and I talked to as many people as I could about Wu's policies. And while I did not meet a single person who supported the mayor, she somehow enjoys an approval rating of about 65% headed into the primary.
Wu made it clear on Monday that immigration is a key policy issue for her, stating, "For months, ICE has refused to provide any information about their activities in Boston and refuses to issue warrants, while we hear reports of ICE agents taking parents as they are dropping their kids off at school. That does not make our community safer."
Sadly, her narrative that ICE removing illegals from the city is more dangerous than allowing these individuals to roam freely is hitting home for many people, and she is expected to romp in this primary race, with the general election then a mere formality. It truly is sad, and it is exactly why we need the Supreme Court to finally take this issue on and hear the cases brought by Bondi against sanctuary cities. One way or another, we need to have this issue settled ASAP.
