One of the main purposes of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was to cut wasteful spending.
USAID was put on notice right out of the gate, which sent the entire left into a frenzy.
As of late, however, there has been a big push to trace the money that was spent, and this has set off some major alarms about organizations linked to terrorists that have been receiving U.S. taxpayer dollars. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now hoping to rectify that situation.
NGOs have long been linked to some shady practices, but they receive billions in funding every year from our government.
In March, a report was released by NGO Monitor, which showed numerous organizations with terror links that had been receiving money through U.S. charities and financial services providers.
For instance, in one case, the report stated that the Foundation for Middle East Peace had provided funding for groups such as “Al-Haq, Al-Haq Europe, Al Mezan, Defense for Children International -- Palestine (DCI-P), and Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). FMEP does not state how much each NGO is receiving.”
Even George Soros’ Open Society Foundation was listed, having shelled out hundreds of millions to questionable organizations.
When the Trump administration announced it was slashing USAID programs, it never said anything about cutting the ones that were actually helping people.
Instead, the cuts would target waste, fraud, and the elimination of what had more or less become a money funnel for left-wing organizations.
That did not stop news outlets such as NPR, which is (or was) publicly funded, from putting out a biased narrative that “14 million lives could be lost due to Trump aid cuts.”
The reports were based on assumptions that all funding would be cut and did not take into account the programs that the Trump administration would allow to continue.
Another watchdog report has surfaced, this one from the Middle East Forum, again showing ties between groups funded by the United States government and terrorist organizations, and DHS took notice.
The report claimed that more than $25 million in grants went to terror-linked organizations between 2013 and 2023. So, the DHS responded by cutting roughly $8 million in funding to the suspect groups.
DHS then stated, "We take the results of the MEF report very seriously and are thankful for the work of conservative watchdog groups."
It is all but assumed that Democrats will push back against the cuts, but they had better be careful about his one. If DHS proves these alleged links, once again, Democrats will have egg on their faces, and they cannot afford that as we head into the 2026 midterm election cycle, at least not on this front. The American people are already sick and tired of being put on the back burner by Democrats, so they need to tread very carefully here.
