Democrats losing nationwide edge in voter numbers

For years, this country was been dominated by Democrat voters.

As I have told my friends many times, if Democrats could get every voter to show up, Republicans would never win a national election.

Those days appear to be coming to an end, however, as the Democratic Party is shedding voters in record numbers.

DeSantis starts the trend

The big push toward more conservative voters started with Gov. Ron DeSantis during his last election in Florida.

DeSantis turned what has always been a true battleground state into a red stronghold, winning counties that were rarely, if ever, won by a Republican.

In August 2024, it was announced that Republicans had taken the affiliation edge in the state, now having in excess of one million more registered voters than Democrats.

According to the report, of the more than 13 million registered voters, 5.3 million were Republicans, with 4.3 million registering as Democrats. The remaining 3.9 million were not affiliated with any party.

Still dominating nationally

After the 2024 election, Democrats still held a huge margin compared to Republicans in terms of registered voters with declared party affiliation.

Democrats held roughly 46% of all registrations, while Republicans held about 43%. Now, that 3% is far more daunting than it seems, as that represents a gap of nearly nine million votes nationwide.

Keep in mind, there is still a very large contingent of voters who are not affiliated with any party, so there are still a lot of votes up for grabs in elections, which is why the GOP makes such a concentrated effort to draw in independent voters each cycle.

Trending

A recent analysis of registered voters conducted by the New York Times found that the Democratic Party has shed more than two million voters since Joe Biden took office, a crushing blow to its future prospects.

During that period, the GOP picked up 2.4 million voters, creating a massive 4.5 million vote swing. Now, some of those picked up are former Democrats, but there is a very troublesome sign in the research for those on the left.

The study found that when it comes to voters under the age of 45, it is now the GOP that is making gains, not the Democratic Party, contrary to what we have seen in the past. Something else to consider is that some states, such as Texas, do not register voters by party. Based on the states that follow that practice, the GOP could actually hold an advantage or be in an effective tie with the Democratic Party.

Michael Pruser, who tracks voter registration closely as the director of data science for Decision Desk HQ, stated, “I don’t want to say, ‘The death cycle of the Democratic Party,’ but there seems to be no end to this.”

I would not stick a knife in the liberal party just yet, but I think we will have a far better idea where we stand once the 2026 midterm elections are over. If the GOP holds the House, which history tells us is a near impossibility, then the Democratic Party will be on death watch, at least the version of it that we know today.
