The shocker of the week goes to Donald Trump for following through with his promise, or threat (depending upon how you see it) to federalize Washington, D.C., and address the violent crime issue that has plagued the city.
Most Democrats have expressed outrage, but Trump and Mayor Muriel Bowser have been very civil with each other thus far this term.
Bowser has, in fact, stated that she will not fight Trump on his initiative and recently indicated that while she does have some concerns about his plans, she looks forward to working with the president to make D.C. safer.
Democrats are losing their minds over Trump's actions. For example, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has accused the president of wanting to rid the country of black elected officials.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has vowed to fight Trump’s federalization of the city with everything he has.
Raskin stated, “Of course, the president has a major political bone to pick with the people of Washington, D.C., who have voted 10-to-1 against him at every opportunity. So this is one more chance to exact revenge.”
That is about as far from the truth as one could be, and the facts support Trump in this matter. If Trump wanted revenge, he would just leave D.C. alone and allow criminals to overtake the city, not try to make it safer.
I am sure Democrats were stunned when ABC News anchor Kyra Phillips described an incident that had a rather dramatic impact on her life in D.C.
She revealed, “I can tell you firsthand here in downtown D.C. where we work, right here around our bureau, just in the past six months, you know, there were two people shot, one person died, literally two blocks down here from the bureau."
Phillips continued, “It was within the last two years that I actually was jumped walking just two blocks down from here. And then, just this morning, one of my co-workers said her car was stolen, a block away from the bureau.”
We have all seen the reports… the former DOGE worker, several members of Congress, and even Joe Biden’s niece have fallen victim to crime in this area. This cannot be brushed under the rug as Democrats had hoped.
Trust me, if Mayor Bowser, a Democrat, thought that Trump was out of bounds legally, she would be fighting him tooth and nail, but she instead stated that she will not litigate this issue, and she will be working together with the president and his administration to fix the city's problems.
Bowser told reporters she wants "to make the most of the additional officer support.”
D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith is also on board, stating, “We are here to work together with our federal partners,” adding that there are pockets of crime in the city they plan to address with the added assets.
See what happens when you take feelings and politics out of the equation? I have to give props to Bowser for not falling in line with the attacks by her fellow Democrats. This is a huge break in terms of showing that both sides can work together for the betterment of law-abiding citizens in this country. It is just a shame that, as Bowser makes an effort to work with Trump for a common cause, the rest of the party is throwing shade and trying to portray this as a racist move on the president's part.
