Romania scrambles fighters after Russian strike near border

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been a thorn in the side of President Donald Trump since he took office.

He vowed to have the war over on his first day back in the White House, but we are nearly seven months in, and these two countries are still duking it out.

Now tensions have risen higher after a strike near the border of Romania, which led to the NATO country scrambling its fighter jets.

Ukraine hits Russia

With peace talks allegedly taking place, both Ukraine and Russia have continued to carry out attacks.

Several days ago, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack that hit an oil depot near Sochi.

Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed that a fuel tank was hit and more than 100 firefighters were needed to put out the blaze.

Russia would return the favor shortly.

Returning fire

On Tuesday, Russia fired off yet another attack against Ukraine, but this strike was dangerously close to Romania’s border, which put the NATO country on the defensive, scrambling its fighter jets just in case tensions escalated further.

Romania's defense ministry posted, “On the night of August 5-6, the Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on the civilian infrastructure in the Ismail area, Ukraine, in the vicinity of the border with Romania.”

The post continued, "The radar systems of the MApN detected air targets in Ukrainian space, close to Tulcea County. At 1:10a.m., the population in the north of the county was warned via RO-Alert.”

If a strike happens that impacts a NATO country, we are likely looking at WWIII, so this is not something to just brush off. Russia has to know it is tempting fate by conducting strikes so close to the border like this.

Progress continues

Despite all signs to the contrary, the Trump administration announced that some progress is being made in talks with Russia to work out a peace deal.

Trump posted to Truth Social, "My Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Great progress was made!"

The president continued, "Afterwards, I updated some of our European Allies. Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come."

Trump has to negotiate peace before the 2026 election cycle kicks in. If not, his promises are going to be fodder for attack ads against Republicans from their Democrat opponents. The House is already going to be hard to hold, so we do not need more ammunition for Democrats to use against us. Get the deal done, Mr. Trump, or we are going to pay a dear price for it.
