Donald Trump accuses Chuck Schumer of 'extortion' amid Senate confirmation battles

President Donald Trump has been in office for more than six months, but he still has more than 100 nominees who are effectively being held hostage by Senate Democrats.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and company are using every tactic they can to keep Trump’s administration ground to a halt.

Well, Trump just unleashed about the situation, and that likely means big changes coming soon, a scenario that has Democrats scrambling.

No deal

Senate confirmations are supposed to be about allowing a presidential administration to do its job, about not backroom deals and bribes, but that is how the Senate works these days.

So, rather than approve or block Trump’s nominations based on candidate qualifications, Schumer is trying to get the GOP to release funding for partisan programs before facilitating confirmations, even in the cases of less controversial appointments.

Schumer has not even hidden the fact that this is his tactic, stating, "Donald Trump tried to bully us, go around us, threaten us, call us names, but he got nothing.”

It is clear that Democrats do not care about the country… It’s about flexing, power, and money, nothing else.

Time for change

The nomination process has been bastardized, and it clearly needs to be changed.

To that point, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) stated, "I think they're desperately in need of change.”

He continued, “I think that the last six months have demonstrated that this process, nominations is broken. And so I expect there will be some good robust conversations about that."

The challenge, of course, is not to create rules that can be used against the GOP if and when the Democrats take back control of the White House or Senate.

Trump chimes in

Trump has been relatively quiet on this front, but that all changed over the last few days, as the president has gone on some epic rants, including telling Thune to walk away from Schumer’s demands.

The president further stated, "Politically embattled Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, wants the Republicans to pay, as extortion, two billion dollars in order for the radical left Democrats to approve the hundreds of Trump appointments who have been waiting for months, and are raring to go.”

He added, "This has never happened before. There has never, in U.S. history, been such a delay. They are extortionists! Republicans must create legislation in order to get out of the grasp of these country-hating thugs. Move quickly!"

I have zero issue if Democrats block a nominee based on a lack of qualifications, but to do what they are doing right now is despicable. This only hurts the country, but liberals will never see it that way. As I have stated before, I have never rooted for a president to fail, as I want the country overall to do well, but the Democrats are not only rooting for Trump to fail, but they are also more or less creating the necessary conditions for that outcome by engaging in these ridiculous temper tantrums.
