Trump details tens of thousands dying monthly in Ukraine war, presses for a deal

President Trump said tens of thousands of people have died each month in the Ukraine-Russia war, and he wants Zelenskyy and Putin to settle before winter.

Speaking to reporters Saturday on the White House South Lawn as he departed, President Donald Trump laid out stark monthly death figures from the fighting and said both sides need to end it.

Fox News reported that Trump put the toll at 25,000 dead last month, 32,000 the month before that, and 33,000 two months ago, with another 25,000 this month. He said the dead were mostly soldiers.

"Last month, 25,000 people died in the Ukraine-Russia war, OK? Twenty-five thousand," Trump said.

"The month before that, 32,000 people died... mostly soldiers, 97% soldiers. But whether they're soldiers or civilians, think of it: 32,000. Two months ago, 33,000 people; this month, 25,000 people died. What a shame."

Those numbers came as Trump again pressed for a settlement between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump wants a deal before the heavy winter

Trump said he has spoken often with Zelenskyy and that both leaders are moving in a direction that could produce an agreement.

"I spoke to him a lot, and he's going along and Putin's going along. And, someday, hopefully in the not too distant future, maybe before the heavy winter, they'll make a deal," he said.

He was direct about what he wants from Kyiv.

"I agreed with Zelenskyy that we talked about a lot of different subjects, and many of those subjects, very strong agreement. But you know what I want him to do? Make a deal. I want him to settle with Putin, and I want Putin to settle with him."

The war has already exacted a massive price. The Center for Strategic & International Studies has stated that Russia alone has lost as many as 450,000 soldiers since invading Ukraine in 2022.

Zelenskyy announces Patriot production licenses

On Friday, Zelenskyy announced that Trump had given final approval for Ukraine to license and produce U.S. Patriot missile interceptors. Trump had previously hesitated to grant those licenses.

Zelenskyy posted that the decision was locked in after their meeting.

"There are concrete agreements regarding Patriot licenses. At our meeting, President Trump stressed that he had made his final decision: Ukraine will receive licenses to produce Patriot missiles."

Patriot interceptors are a core air-defense system. Licensing production in Ukraine would let Kyiv build more of the missiles closer to the fight instead of waiting solely on U.S. supply.

Fox News Digital contacted the White House for comment on Trump’s casualty remarks.

Monthly tolls put pressure on both capitals

Trump’s figures, 25,000, 32,000, 33,000, then 25,000 again, frame the war as a grinding monthly slaughter, overwhelmingly of troops. He did not release a public methodology for the counts. He did make clear he expects both Zelenskyy and Putin to move toward a settlement, and he tied that hope to the window before deep winter.

The South Lawn comments paired that urgency with a concrete weapons decision already announced by Zelenskyy: U.S. approval for Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptors under license. One track is diplomacy. The other is hardening Ukraine’s ability to shoot down incoming strikes while talks continue.

Trump’s message was consistent on both points. End the dying. Make the deal. And give Ukraine the production authority he had held back before.

When the monthly death counts run into the tens of thousands, endless war stops looking like strategy and starts looking like failure to finish the job at the table.
