A Florida resident's Instagram video of a crab clutching what appears to be a pocket-knife blade and swiping at his dog has racked up more than 20 million views, and yes, it looks exactly as unhinged as it sounds.
Eduardo Alvarez posted the clip to his Instagram account, @bestdad_ceo, with a caption that summed up the general sentiment: "Florida is getting out of hand." The video shows a crab in Alvarez's yard gripping what looks like a small blade, squaring off against his dog, Summer, and taking swipes at the animal. Alvarez stepped in, grabbed the crab bare-handed, and relocated it further into his yard, laughing the entire time.
How the crab ended up armed remains a mystery. The New York Post reported that the origin of the blade is unclear, though it appears to be from a pocket knife. The crab itself appears to be a blue land crab, a species commonly found within five miles of the Florida coast, with a legspan up to 12 inches wide and a weight of roughly one pound.
In the video, Alvarez narrates the standoff with the calm of a man who has seen stranger things in his own backyard. He addressed his dog directly:
"Summer, where the heck did you find a crab with a freaking shank?"
He followed that up with a warning, not to the crab, but to Summer.
"Summer, I don't recommend messing with this."
Then came his verdict on the animal:
"This is a gangster-a** crab."
None of that stopped Alvarez from picking the crab up and moving it along. No injuries to the dog, the man, or the crab were reported.
The video blew past 20 million views after Alvarez shared it on a Wednesday. Commenters piled on with reactions that split between amusement and disbelief. One user wrote, "I don't know what's more surprising; a crab with a shank or you just lifting him up like its an everyday occurrence." Another added, "You can tell it's Florida cuz he picked it up while laughing."
Several users said the encounter was the kind of thing that could only happen in Florida. Others questioned whether the footage was AI-created. No independent verification of the video's authenticity appeared in the reporting, and the New York Post noted it had reached out to Alvarez for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
Alvarez's crab is not the first crustacean filmed holding a weapon. In 2022, a Michigan native named Kyle King was camping, reportedly in Japan, where he now lives, when scratching on his tent woke him at 2 a.m. He found a giant coconut crab outside, clutching a steak knife. King shared video of the encounter online, making it an early entry in the small but growing genre of armed-crab footage.
Coconut crabs are considerably larger than blue land crabs and are known for their grip strength, which makes a knife-wielding specimen a more alarming proposition. Blue land crabs, by comparison, top out around a pound, though as Alvarez's video demonstrates, attitude counts for something.
Only in Florida does a man laugh off a knife-fighting crab, move it to the other side of the yard, and go about his day. The Sunshine State stays undefeated.
