Key Largo man arrested after teen girl calls 911 from inside clothes dryer where she was allegedly hidden

A teenage girl called 911 to report she was being held hostage, and when Monroe County deputies arrived at a Key Largo home, they found her hidden inside a clothes dryer. Christopher Michael Veit, 53, now faces charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, and unlawful sexual activity with a minor after authorities say they uncovered evidence of a sustained sexual relationship between the man and the girl.

The arrest, which took place on a Sunday at approximately 11:45 a.m. at Veit's home on Miramar Drive, has drawn the attention of both the Florida Department of Children and Families and the U.S. Secret Service, the latter because detectives also found "several sheets" of counterfeit currency at the scene. Monroe County investigators say additional charges may still be coming.

The facts as reported paint a grim picture. And they raise hard questions about how a minor who was not from Key Largo ended up inside a grown man's home, and inside his laundry appliance.

What investigators found on Miramar Drive

Fox News Digital reported that authorities responded to the Miramar Drive residence after the girl herself dialed 911 and told dispatchers she was being held hostage. When deputies entered the home, they located her concealed inside a clothes dryer.

She did not suffer life-threatening injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and later released into the custody of a family member.

The girl's 911 call was the break in the case. Investigators say Veit had taken her cellphone after she told him she wanted to leave the home. How she regained access to a phone to make that call remains unclear from available details. But the call brought deputies to the door, and what they found behind it led to Veit's immediate arrest.

The New York Post reported that Veit allegedly bound the girl and forced her into the dryer when she tried to leave. The Post also reported the specific charge of sexual battery of a victim between ages 16 and 17, along with kidnapping, unlawful contact with a minor, and interference with child custody.

That fourth charge, interference with child custody, appears in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office booking information but was not listed among the three charges described in the body of Fox News Digital's initial account. Whether it reflects a formally filed charge or a preliminary designation remains an open question.

An alleged ongoing relationship and counterfeit cash

The kidnapping allegation alone would be disturbing enough. But investigators say the situation runs deeper. Monroe County detectives uncovered evidence of what they described as an ongoing sexual relationship between Veit and the victim. The nature and duration of that relationship have not been publicly detailed, nor has the specific evidence that led investigators to that conclusion.

Cases involving the abduction and concealment of victims, particularly minors, carry a particular weight in communities that depend on neighbors looking out for one another. The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, who vanished from her home under circumstances suggesting she was taken alive, illustrates how these cases haunt families and investigators alike.

Authorities also noted a secondary discovery at the scene: counterfeit currency. Detectives collected "several sheets" of counterfeit bills as evidence. The U.S. Secret Service, the federal agency responsible for investigating counterfeiting, was notified. No charges related to the counterfeit currency have been announced, but the investigation remains active.

The connection between the victim and Veit has not been publicly explained. Authorities stated the girl was not from Key Largo, raising questions about how she came to be at the residence and what relationship, if any, existed before the alleged crimes.

Charges filed, more possible

Veit was booked on charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, and unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Fox News reported that the Monroe County Sheriff's Office indicated additional charges could follow as the investigation continues.

No statement from Veit has been made public. It is unclear whether he has entered a plea or retained counsel. His prior criminal history, if any, has not been disclosed in the reporting.

The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified following the incident, standard protocol when a minor is involved in a case of this nature. The agency's involvement could lead to additional proceedings separate from the criminal case.

In a state where kidnapping cases have produced severe sentences, the charges Veit faces carry significant legal exposure. A Texas jury recently sentenced a FedEx driver to death for the kidnapping and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand, a case that underscored how seriously juries treat crimes against children.

What remains unanswered

Several critical questions remain unresolved. The victim's exact age has not been publicly confirmed beyond "teenage," though the New York Post's reporting of a sexual battery charge specifying a victim between 16 and 17 offers a narrower range. Her city or state of origin has not been disclosed.

How she arrived at Veit's Key Largo home, and under what circumstances, has not been explained by investigators. Whether Veit was present and cooperative when deputies arrived, or was apprehended separately, is also unclear.

The case echoes other investigations where forensic evidence and persistent detective work proved essential to uncovering the full scope of a suspect's conduct. Monroe County detectives appear to be building a case that extends well beyond the events of a single Sunday morning.

The discovery of counterfeit currency adds another layer. Whether the counterfeiting is connected to the circumstances that brought the victim to Veit's home, or is an entirely separate matter, remains to be seen. The Secret Service's involvement suggests federal authorities are taking the discovery seriously.

Kidnapping charges involving minors often expand as investigators interview victims, review digital evidence, and trace a suspect's history. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has signaled that this case is far from closed.

Cases like these also raise uncomfortable questions about how long predatory conduct can persist before someone dials 911. In this instance, a teenage girl, bound, hidden inside an appliance, stripped of her phone, found a way to call for help herself. That fact alone should keep investigators digging and prosecutors pressing for the fullest possible accountability.

When a child has to rescue herself from inside a clothes dryer, every adult and every institution in her orbit owes an answer for how it got that far.
