Justin Fairfax were likely recording when he shot and killed his estranged wife just after midnight Thursday and then turned the gun on himself, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference hours later. One of those children called 911. Police arrived at the Annandale, Virginia, home to find both Justin Fairfax and his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, dead from gunshot wounds. Davis told reporters the gun used to kill Cerina Fairfax "seems to be the same gun that he used to kill himself."

Davis said Fairfax had recently been served paperwork related to an upcoming court proceeding. He drew a direct line between that paperwork and the violence.
"From what I understand in this early stage, former lieutenant governor Fairfax was recently served some paperwork associated with an upcoming court proceeding that apparently led to this incident last night."
A judge had ordered Fairfax to appear in court on April 21, the Washington Times reported. The couple was still living under the same roof despite the separation, an arrangement that, by the court's own written assessment, had produced prolonged and extreme tension.
