We are about to see what the Republican Party is made of… backbones or slinkies.
The voters of this country have made it very clear that they want to see voter ID laws in place, but Democrats refuse to budge.
Trump has made it a mandate that he will not sign another piece of legislation until the SAVE Act is passed, but there are simply not enough votes to force it through. Now, we are starting to see fingers pointing in all directions.
Democrats have held the line that the SAVE Act is Jim Crow 2.0, but nobody is buying it.
They are being mocked online by influential podcasters, such as Joe Rogan, and even within their party.
For instance, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has refused to characterize the legislation in that way, but leadership insists it will not move off this line.
The line in the sand is over a birth certificate being needed to confirm a citizen’s right to vote, which takes less than 10 minutes to file online. Yet, Democrats claim it is voter suppression and will prevent women from being able to vote.
Trump is now willing to sabotage his administration by refusing to sign any legislation passed by Congress until the SAVE Act is on his desk.
He stated, “I’m not going to sign anything until this is approved.”
Trump believes there is no way the GOP can win the next election without this election integrity bill being passed.
What’s more, he is vowing to hold the party accountable if it is not, and we all know what that means.
Republicans are now trying to figure out how to present this without suffering Trump’s wrath if they are unable to get it passed. Others are using it as a way to gain Trump’s favor.
For instance, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has been flopping around like a fish out of water on his support to break the filibuster. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) senses the bill will fail, so he wants to see the blame deflected to the Democrats.
He stated, "I suggest our first goal will be to try and pass it, but I understand how difficult that is, and I'm sympathetic with the position of not ending the filibuster. But short of that, our next goal ought to be to make sure the Democrats get blamed, because they're the ones that are truly blocking this." I have been covering politics for more than a decade, and I have heard this line regurgitated by both sides more times than I can count. How about you actually do something other than figure out who to blame?
This bill will fail, but I think it is one of those times where you floor it to get everyone on the record. Americans need to know where their senators stand on this issue. If it does fail, the only alternative is to include it in a budgetary bill and use reconciliation, but that means it has to be approved by the Senate parliamentarian, and that is going to take some slick legal work.
