The depositions of Bill and Hillary Clinton should have been a massive win for Republicans on the House Oversight Committee, but the rogue actions of just a few players likely turned this into a bust, or even a loss for the entire GOP.
Some big moments could have been a huge win, such as Bill leering at pictures of young women, and Hillary getting irate when she was shown pictures of her husband hanging out with Epstein.
Virtually all of that was offset by a picture snapped by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and her desire to put clicks, shares, and likes over country.
The Clintons wanted special treatment for this deposition, but that played into the narrative the GOP wanted to push.
Hillary had demanded special lighting and background for the deposition, the diva that she is. The committee had to come to them. The list goes on, but you get the idea here. This was a power play by Hillary, but the committee played along because it knew it had the win if they followed the rules of the game.
When the list was leaked, Hillary’s spokesperson went off, stating, “Finally, whatever 25-year-old House staffers leaked this to you, maybe they should spend more time focusing on their investigation into Epstein’s crimes instead of playing production assistant.”
That’s their playbook, right? Talk loudly, curse, and be indignant so everyone believes you are telling the truth.
Bill and Hillary were lying through their teeth during the deposition, as anyone with any knowledge of their history could see.
I mean, Bill was impeached for lying under oath about Monica Lewinsky, but when he was asked if he had ever lied under oath, he said no. If Republicans wanted to be petty, they could refer him for that statement alone.
But the moment everyone is talking about is when Hillary nearly walked out when a picture surfaced online of the hearing.
It turns out, Rep. Boebert decided to snap a shot and send it to an influencer to post. It was childish. It was selfish. And it likely cost the GOP the win from these hearings.
This is someone whom I have come to enjoy reading because she gives a rather fair assessment of the current political landscape, and she and I are in lockstep on this one. Devine, however, dug deeper, believing that when the tables are turned, Democrats will force Melania Trump to testify to embarrass her in front of the cameras.
Had Republicans stayed focused on the facts, this could have been a slam dunk. But once again, Boebert decided to pitch conspiracy theories like Pizzagate, and Hillary ate her up, responding, “It was an outrageous allegation that ended up hurting a number of people … I can’t believe you’re even referencing it.”
Boebert was looking for a moment rather than facts. And that cannot be tolerated. It is behavior like that that is costing the GOP support and making us all look like a clown show. This is not a game, and it surely is not a social media popularity contest.
It is, however, about protecting our republic and preserving the very foundation of this country, our Constitution. And you don’t do that by snapping pictures, giggling, sending them off to your friends, and pitching conspiracy theories at a formal deposition. I hope you are happy, Ms. Boebert, because you just cost us what should have been a slam-dunk win.
