Democrats want to stop Trump from destroying terrorists in Iran, but they simply don't have the numbers to do so.
There are numerous Republicans who are trying to cover themselves with primary elections now taking place and a general election less than a year away.
While this effort will get some Republican support, it won’t have enough to pass, not to mention the fact that Trump would veto the bill anyway.
For our readers who are just joining us, I have a quick explanation of this legislation below. For our loyal readers who are already familiar with this, you can skip down to the next section.
This legislation does restrict presidential powers in regard to military conflicts, but it does not completely block Trump from conducting a strategic strike or operation.
This legislation requires the administration to inform Congress of its actions, which the administration did. The Gang of Eight was briefed on the operation.
It requires any operation to withdraw troops within a 60 to 90-day window (the president can request a 30-day extension of the 60-day window) after the operation starts unless the operation gets congressional approval. A formal declaration of war would need to be approved by Congress.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) is leading the charge to push forward with a war powers resolution to dial back Trump’s powers.
Kaine argued, “The president seems to have no plan for the aftermath and it looks like Iran is now poised to choose a new leader from the current regime.”
That is not exactly true, as the administration and Pentagon have given some big-picture assessments of what they would like to have happen, but there are no guarantees in a situation such as this.
Unfortunately, there are Republicans who are siding with Democrats, but it still won’t be enough to override a Trump veto.
The usual players, that being Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Susan Collins (R-ME), are all against the strikes against Iran.
I expected that resistance, but I did not expect resistance from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on this, who seemed to create doubt, as well as categorizing the last operation, Midnight Hammer, as the 12-Day War.
Cruz stated, “I don’t have present-day intelligence on what progress they had made toward rebuilding nuclear weapons since we bombed their facilities. I have no indication that they were anywhere close to getting nuclear weapons because our bombing was devastating.”
Everyone seems to be of the assumption that we needed to have Iran ready to knock on our door before taking action. Sec. Marco Rubio had already stated that Iran was trying to move forward with its missile program to be able to launch longer-range missiles. If Iran was trying to refire its nuclear program, developing a better delivery device, and had walked away from negotiations, it was clear what Trump was going to do and needed to do to stop Iran. To be clear, I support these strikes, and I truly have to question the loyalty to this country of people who don’t support them.
