You saw the outbursts. You saw the disgusting pin. But there was something else Tlaib did during the SOTU that slipped under the radar, and it might be worse than all of it.
It seemed as though it had slipped under the radar, however. That being Tlaib screaming “KKK” at the top of her lungs.
The GOP is demanding she be held accountable with a censure.
One of the things that sickens me about the current state of politics, especially the path Democrats have taken, is the abuse of F-bombs and lack of decorum. And this is coming from someone who talks like a truck driver regularly.
Members of Congress are supposed to set the example, not wear F-bombs on pins that can be seen on national TV, but that is what Tlaib did.
She had donned an “F*** ICE” pin, continuing to spit venom at law enforcement.
As bad as that was, I don’t think anything was more disgraceful than Democrats refusing to stand when Trump challenged them on the duty to protect Americans over illegals. The entire country saw where Dems stand, and it was a dagger to the heart of the party.
Once the reports came out, you knew Trump was going to respond, but I really wish he hadn’t. I say this because Democrats took the bait, and they were paying the price for those outbursts for a hot minute. People on both sides were upset over them not standing, and the media was on the attack over the pin worn by Tlaib, but that all changed when Trump decided to rant on Truth Social.
Trump could not help himself, and went with his usual “low IQ” comment, stating, "When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event, they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized.”
He continued, “When people can behave like that, and knowing that they are Crooked and Corrupt Politicians, so bad for our Country, we should send them back from where they came - as fast as possible.”
Now, rather than being focused on what they did, everyone is talking about Trump’s comments. Someone, anyone, please get that phone out of his hand.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has come to Trump’s aid, reminding everyone that Tlaib was countering the “U-S-A” chant by the Republicans by yelling, “KKK," even posting a video online to capture the moment.
The funny thing about all this is that the Democrats sitting next to Omar and Tlaib seemed more uncomfortable than supportive.
The responses mostly agreed with the NRCC, with one man posting, “As a Black American, watching Tlaib, a non-Black person chant ‘KKK’ is beyond offensive. That word carries generations of terror and pain; it’s not a prop for political theater. This is conduct unbecoming of a Member of Congress. Censure her.”
I agree she needs to be held accountable, but a censure amounts to nothing more than a smack on the top of the hand. Remove her from her committees, at the very least, and make her a non-factor. At some point, something has to be done about the toxicity in Congress, and this seems like a good place to start.
