Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just got blindsided, not by Republicans, but by one of her own.
Trump pushed the stock-trading limitations bill during his speech, with a clear poke at the former Speaker.
The cameras panned the room to find Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on her feet, applauding.
Legislators have to come up with some type of compromise if they are ever going to get this legislation passed.
Be it right or wrong, there is no way current members of Congress will pass a bill that penalizes them for their current portfolios, which helps explain some of the odd exceptions we have seen in various versions of the bill in the past.
For instance, a recent version would allow legislators to continue to trade, but they would have to provide seven to 14 days' notice for those trades.
Democrats blasted the bill when it was presented by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), with one lawmaker saying that it was “a loophole so big, you could fly a Qatari jet right through it.”
Trump encouraged Congress to pass the Stop Insider Trading Act, stating, “As we ensure that all Americans can profit from a rising stock market, let’s also ensure that members of Congress cannot corruptly profit using inside information. Pass the Stop Insider Trading Act without delay.”
As the camera panned the room, Sen. Warren and a handful of other Democrats were seen standing and applauding, which set Trump up for his shot.
The president stated, “They stood up for that — I can’t believe it. Did Nancy Pelosi stand up for that? Doubt it.”
Pelosi did not stand, and she had a few words for Trump after his speech.
The last image I have of Pelosi is her seal-clapping during her time as Speaker during a Trump SOTU address. Pelosi no longer holds that seat, but the media still sought her out for a response.
Pelosi commented on Trump’s speech, stating, “I thought the speech was lazy. It’s one thing to acknowledge patriotism and people getting well and everything when you have absolutely nothing to do with their courage or the rest.”
She continued, “But you spend an hour and a half doing it — what is the state of the nation?”
If Trump’s speech was lazy, how would one rate Pelosi's response? Let’s face facts here… Trump will never be able to do anything that would satisfy the left in Congress. But I would note, Trump's speech polled very well, including on CNN, so perhaps that is some voter fatigue settling in from the tired narratives Democrats continue to pitch against Trump.
