The ability of Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot is utterly amazing to me.
The latest example is Governor Gavin Newsom, who insulted the entire black population while trying to pander to them.
Now he is being ripped for it, and he is not taking it very well.
Several weeks ago, Donald Trump reposted a video on his Truth Social account that was meant to be a joke, but it was interpreted as being racist. Trump’s social media team was likely behind the post, but it is his account, so he is the one who ultimately takes the heat.
The video had a “Lion King” theme, and it featured the Obamas as monkeys, so you can clearly see why the racist narrative was immediately used by Democrats to take a shot at Trump, and this included Newsom.
The California governor responded to the post, “It’s disgraceful. It's racist. It's abhorrent. The President of the United States sending out a racist trope should disgust every human being in this room. Everyone. I don't care if you watched Kid Rock this [Super Bowl] weekend or Bad Bunny.”
He continued, “In any other circumstance that person would be fired, the board of directors would ask him to be fired. Be ashamed and humiliated and would have apologized. He did none of the above. I can't believe that was washed away just with another news cycle. How the hell is he allowed to get away with that?”
Note the outrage, the call for an apology, the bewilderment of how a new news cycle allows this to pass, then let’s fast forward to this week, where Newsom was promoting his book with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who is black.
Newsom stated, “I’m not trying to impress you, I’m just trying to impress upon you, ‘I’m like you. I’m not better than you.’ I’m a 960 SAT guy.”
He continued, “And I’m not trying to offend anyone. I’m not trying to act all there if you got 940 … You’ve never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech.”
This was Newsom playing up his dyslexia, but it backfired badly. The moment I heard those words, I thought, “How insulting is that to Dickens?” This was pandering. This is Newsom, who came out of college armed with a rather large stake from the Getty family, trying to pretend he is one of us. Instead, he came off as a racist, at least in my opinion.
Nicki Minaj, who recently joined the MAGA fold, posted, “His way of bonding with black ppl is to tell them how stupid he is & that he can’t read.” She then documented all the things that were “handed” to Newsom in his life.
She concluded, “He’s not just TELLING them that they’re all probably stupid & probably can’t read, he’s LITERALLY SLOW-ING-DOWN-HIS-SPEECH to make them understand the words that are coming out of his mouth!!!! As if they’re children!!!! That means he REALLY BELIEVES they’re slow. He’s not just saying it—he didn’t misspeak!!!! He BELIEVES it!!!! Do ya love it?!?!! Do ya just love it, black ppl?!????”
It was not just Minaj who was critical, as there were plenty of black liberal and moderate voices who took issue with what Newsom said.
Did Newsom follow his own mandate and offer an apology? No, he did the complete opposite; he went nuclear and made a post, and I am paraphrasing, if you were not outraged by what Trump posted, you had no right to criticize what he said.
To me, the last 24 hours represent everything the Democrat Party is about today. Gaslighting, pandering, belittling, fake outrage, and hypocrisy.
