During the 2024 race, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seemed hesitant to back Kamala Harris for president after Joe Biden was forced out of the race.
She did endorse Harris, but there were clearly some reservations about her, if you could read between the lines.
Those suspicions, at least in my eyes, were confirmed, with reports now breaking that Pelosi is going to back Gavin Newsom in the 2028 race.
There is no doubt that Pelosi was deeply involved in the effort to knock Joe Biden out of the 2024 election.
However, she was not in favor of gifting Harris the nomination, but her hand was forced after the Biden endorsement. Reports at the time stated that Pelosi favored an open primary race to see who would replace Joe.
Regardless, after Harris had the momentum, Pelosi fell in line, stating, “Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States.”
She continued, “My enthusiastic support for Kamala Harris for president is official, personal and political.”
After the election was over, Pelosi blamed Joe Biden for the loss, but she also blamed the coronation of Harris.
Pelosi stated, "Had the president [Biden] gotten out sooner, there may have been other candidates in the race.”
That, to me, was Pelosi saying that she really did not want to back Harris for president.
And yes, I will concede that is some tea leaf reading on my part, but I just never got the impression from Pelosi that she thought Harris was the right person for the job.
Reports are now blowing up that Pelosi is all-in on Gavin Newsom, and that she thinks he would make a “great president.”
A former Pelosi aide stated, “She’s a Gavin fan girl and she doesn’t crush on many people.”
The aide continued, “I will say this: She’s hardly ever wrong. When she says she sees something, it’s a real thing.”
This could significantly complicate Harris’ path, who is still considered the favorite for the nomination. When you factor in that Harris is a woman, a minority, and from California, and Pelosi is backing the white male from the state, well, this has all the makings of some serious inner-party turmoil.
