Several months ago, I posted a long article in another publication about how I would address the immigration situation to flip the narrative on Democrats.
Recently, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) presented legislation that more or less presented my exact plan as a solution.
Now, someone I never thought I would see appears ready to get on board with this… Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK).
Before I get into the op-ed by Lawler, I know I am going to take some heat for this post, but that is okay. I firmly believe in border control, and I firmly believe that every illegal immigrant in this country should be removed, but what I want is not necessarily the best solution for the country and the conservative movement right now.
We need to think big picture here, and that sometimes means chewing on some tough meat, and that is what I proposed several months ago. Now, I won’t accuse Lawler of stealing my ideas, but I will say I outlined nearly the exact solution that is now part of the legislation he is proposing after the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
As Lawler noted in his op-ed, what we are doing right now is not working, and it is far from being the fault of the administration. I believe the situation we have is because of the Democrat rhetoric, but that is not going to stop, so we need to figure out a way to flip this in our favor.
We offer self-deportation with the option to come back legally, non-citizen residency for those with proven jobs, and penalties to be paid by both the migrants and employers for hiring illegals. They never vote, they get no federal benefits, and they can never become citizens. It’s far from perfect, but it’s workable, and it forces Democrats into a corner. Present that, and if they reject, you can say you tried.
One of the big holdups in recent budget talks has been adding the Save Act to the spending bill.
Even though 83% of Americans (more than 70% of Democrats) believe we should have some form of voter ID, Dems continue to push the voter suppression angle.
It’s all nonsense, as the Virginia election just proved. And to that point, Mullin stated, “The truth is that there [are] plenty of Democrats that are representing states that have voter ID already, and they are willing to have a conversation, just not publicly.”
The problem on the SAVE Act is Democrat leadership, so that means getting with individuals to discuss it and override leadership. We can get this through the House, and we only need a handful of Democrats in the Senate. This can be done.
I never thought Mullin would be on this immigration boat, but he sounds like he is willing to listen, and that is a good thing.
Mullin and I agree that any path to citizenship for any illegal immigrant is a non-starter, period (Lawler’s proposal does off some paths to citizenship, which I do not agree with under any circumstances).
Mullin conceded this is not going to be an easy path, adding, “I think if you wanted to have that conversation, that needs to be a very long conversation that Democrats and Republicans, and we took the people, meaning the people that elected us, and we take them into consideration, too. … I think that’s a very difficult path, but I’m not saying that — it’s not an absolute nonstarter, but it is, if we talk anything about amnesty, at all.”
Let me tell you why I like this idea. Dems say it is about being humane and moral, and giving people the ability to have a better life. My solution gives them that, but it will never allow them to vote. The ONLY reason not to support my plan is if you want these people to impact elections. That is why I say you offer the plan and put the decision to Democrats. Make them publicly admit if it is about the people or the votes. We all know how it will go, and that very well could be the turning point that gets America back on Trump and the Republicans side.
