I never imagined a Super Bowl halftime show would be so polarizing, but that is the world we live in today.
Less than 20% of this country speaks Spanish, yet Bad Bunny was chosen, likely because Apple Music paid $50 million to sponsor the show and wanted its top artist to see more streams on its music platforms.
Liberals touted him as the unifier, but the show did the complete opposite, and now Bad Bunny is nowhere to be seen on Instagram.
That is how Donald Trump described the halftime show during the game, and I kind of agree with him.
Generally speaking, I couldn’t care less about the halftime show, as I generally take that time to reload the snacks and stretch my legs, but when I heard it was Bad Bunny, it almost seemed like this was a political statement.
Bad Bunny was being touted as someone who would unify with his show, but the lyrics were lewd, at least some of them, and the entire show was in Spanish, which alienated regular viewers. If he wanted to unify, would it not have been better to perhaps do at least one song in English?
Trump felt the same way, stating, "It makes no sense, is an affront to the Greatness of America, and doesn’t represent our standards of Success, Creativity, or Excellence. Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children that are watching from throughout the U.S.A., and all over the World.”
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) took serious offense to some of the lyrics in the songs, branding the show as “indecent,” and now suggesting a congressional investigation into it.
He stated, “The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show was pure smut, brazenly aired on national television for every American family to witness. Children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.”
He continued, “And if that weren't outrageous enough, the performance's lyrics openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities. These flagrant, indecent acts are illegal to be displayed on public airways.”
I think this is a bit over the top for several reasons. First, we see far worse on TV regularly. Second, Congress has far more important things to do than to investigate an NFL halftime show. Even the suggestion of this is utterly ridiculous to me, and it will make the GOP look like prudish fools if they follow through with it.
I only saw a few moments of the show, and that was enough for me. It looked like they were lip-syncing the songs, and not very well. I did not think Bad Bunny sounded particularly good, and most of the choreography, at least to me, was junk.
Now, the Latino crowd loved it, but what he was doing, especially since I did not understand it, meant nothing to me, and I would imagine that was the feeling for most people.
The performance got crushed online, which apparently led to Bad Bunny crawling into a hole and hiding, as he completely scrubbed his Instagram account of posts and follows, only leaving his followers intact.
All I can say about that is that he more or less got what he deserved here. He ran his mouth early, bragging about the show being in Spanish, and he upset about half this country talking smack about immigration, so I am not really sure what he thought was going to happen. Then the keyboard warrior went into hiding after backlash ensued. If his feelings got hurt, I would suggest he stay out of the political battle in this country. Don’t start throwing punches, Bad Bunny, unless you are prepared to get hit back. But once again, it just goes to show how mentally frail this generation is.
