New Yorkers are getting a real taste of where they rank on Zohran Mamdani’s priority list, and it is not good.
Standard operating procedure in most big cities before a big storm hits is to find a reason to either arrest the homeless or move them to shelters; basically, anything that can be done to get them inside is done.
Mamdani belayed that order, apparently putting a bigger emphasis on finding himself a suitable winter coat for press conferences, and now a disturbing number of people have died.
In early December, Mamdani announced his plans not to break up homeless encampments.
Mamdani, at the time, stated, "They are simply pushing New Yorkers who are living in the cold to another place where they will live in the cold.”
Mamdani later added, "If you are not connecting homeless New Yorkers to the housing that they so desperately need, then you cannot deem anything you're doing to be a success.”
It all sounds great, but if you don’t get these people inside during the winter, they will die… It’s really that simple.
Mamdani showed up this week, showing a sharp-looking Carhartt jacket with some fancy stitching and patches.
The word "MAYOR" was clearly seen on a patch on the left shoulder, “The City of New York” in fancy font was on the right breast area of the coat, and his motto was stitched around the neckline. According to reports, the jacket and the customizations were a big priority for the new mayor.
That did not go over well with everyone, with one Democrat operative stating, “If he used a fraction of the energy spent on his propaganda videos and prop jackets towards running the city, we wouldn’t have people literally dying from the cold, piles of garbage, and mountains of snow.”
The jacket did not go unnoticed on X, either, with one user posting, “What I didn’t expect was over a dozen dead as a direct result of Mamdani’s leadership, roads clogged with snow, and garbage piling up. But, hey, at least Mamdani got a customized Carhartt for his propaganda videos.”
As of the latest reports, a total of 16 people have died on the streets of New York City since these storms started, and people are getting fed up with a mayor who is more interested in looking sharp and making late-night TV appearances than he is in finding a way to get homeless people off the streets and their trash collected.
Mamdani addressed the situation, stating, “We are continuing to do everything in our power to get every New Yorker into a shelter where they will be warm. The cold is showing no signs of stopping, so neither will the city’s efforts.”
When Mamdani was criticized over the deaths and for not breaking the homeless camps before the storms, he pushed right back, claiming, “It does not appear there’s any relationship between encampments and what we’ve seen with these 16 New Yorkers. We’ve said that it’s a failure because it having only connected three New Yorkers with permanent housing over the course of 365 days.”
I can’t speak for New York City, but I know a lot of cops in Philadelphia, and I know the efforts that were made to remove the homeless during major storms. That did not happen in New York City, and this is now Mamdani’s biggest issue. People are dying on his watch, and he is not delivering on his promises. Not only that, but he is already playing the blame game. Just over 30 days in… the people of New York still have 47 months of this.
