The jousting with the Clintons has been going on for months, and it may have finally come to a head.
After Democrats sided with the GOP to hold Clinton in contempt, Bill’s hand was more or less forced.
He reportedly offered House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) a deal to testify, which was denied, but reports are now breaking that the Clintons have agreed to sit in the hot seat.
There have never been any formal allegations that Clinton did anything illegal with Jeffrey Epstein, yet Clinton has avoided the subject like the plague.
He and Hillary announced that they would refuse to honor the subpoena issued by the House Oversight Committee, likely because they figured the Dems would cover for them, as they had for decades.
With Bill and Hillary still jousting with the committee, Comer stated, "We communicated with President Clinton's legal team for months now, giving them opportunity after opportunity to come in, to give us a day, and they continue to delay, delay, delay, to the point where we had no idea whether they're going to show up today or not.”
Comer then announced that the committee would move forward with contempt charges.
With the Clintons now feeling the squeeze, Bill still thought he had enough leverage to make unrealistic demands of Comer and the committee.
Clinton reportedly offered to testify, but he wanted Comer and the ranking Democrat to come to him; no formal transcript would be kept, and nobody else could be privy to their conversation. In other words, create deniability.
Comer responded, “The Clintons’ latest demands make clear they believe their last name entitles them to special treatment. The House Oversight Committee’s bipartisan subpoenas require the Clintons to appear for depositions that are under oath and transcribed. Former President Clinton has a documented history of parsing language to evade questions, responded falsely under oath, and was impeached and suspended from the practice of law as a result.”
The statement continued, “The absence of an official transcript is an indefensible demand that is insulting to the American people who demand answers about Epstein’s crimes.”
Without Democrats willing to run cover and agreeing to hold the Clintons in contempt, it now appears that the DC power couple has decided to come in and talk to the committee.
Angel Ureña, deputy chief of staff to Bill Clinton, posted to X, "They negotiated in good faith. You did not. But the former president and former Secretary of State will be there and look forward to setting a precedent that applies to everyone."
I find that statement rather amusing, as it still shows that sense of entitlement. You are subpoenaed, which means you have to come in and testify; there is no negotiation.
Now, I cannot help but wonder if they will play games when they sit in the hot seat and pretend that they don’t remember anything. I generally don’t watch a lot of committee hearings in real time, but I will be watching this one.
