The ICE shooting in Minnesota is not a tragedy in Democrats' eyes, but an opportunity.
They will tell you how horrified they are, but watch how they try to take advantage of the situation to get more power.
Unfortunately for Trump, there are some Republicans who are already bailing on him, and that is going to be a huge problem for this administration.
DHS took no time at all to defend the agent in the shooting, with some in the administration (Stephen Miller) going so far as to call the man an “assassin.”
According to the statement from DHS, the man approached “U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun,” then he “violently resisted” agents, leaving the agent no choice but to fire “defensive shots” because he feared for his life
The video is tough to make heads or tails of the shooting, but the media and Democrats have already jumped to a conclusion.
Mind you, all of this happened in a matter of seconds, yet this video will be examined frame-by-frame in an effort to make the agent into an executioner. In fact, that is already how AOC is pitching the story.
While many Democrats were already going to block any funding that included ICE, this shooting has solidified that position.
As a matter of fact, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has already stated his vote will be a “no,” which means the caucus will vote “no” as well.
Sen. Angus King (I-ME) has now joined that group, stating, "I hate shutdowns. I'm one of the people that helped negotiate the solution to the last — the end of the last shutdown, but I can't vote for a bill that includes ICE funding under the circumstances."
This was the gameplan by Democrats all along, but now there are also Republicans jumping ship.
Minnesota Democrats want to run the investigation, likely so they can pin a murder charge on the agent, but to this point, DHS had not been cooperative, having already blocked local officials from the Renee Good shooting (the first ICE-involved shooting).
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) is also recommending local officials investigate this shooting, stating, "The events in Minneapolis are incredibly disturbing. The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake. There must be a full joint federal and state investigation." Honestly, I would have no problem with local officials if I did not think they had already made up their minds. This is not about justice; it’s about power.
This was both unfortunate and horrible, but I don’t think it was purposeful. I am, however, certain of one thing: if Democrats were not whipping people up, calling ICE the Gestapo, I doubt we would have people in the streets confronting agents, thinking they are immune.
The shooting of Renee Good was the time to dial it back, but Dems turned up the heat. At the time, I said they would not be satisfied until bodies were stacked up, and that is, sadly, exactly what is happening. And just as I said after the Good shooting, unless Trump pulls ICE out of Minnesota, I highly doubt that is the last body we will see.
