Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) just keeps going further and further off the deep end over President Donald Trump.
As I noted in past reports, some of his original objections to the president's actions have been legitimate, but he now appears willing to push back on all things Trump simply to be a thorn in the president's side.
The latest example of the Republican lawmaker's resistance is Massie's decision to push for the release of the alleged J6 pipe bomb suspect.
When actor-director Rob Reiner died, I thought Trump would have been better served to stay silent, but I also understood why he commented on the situation, considering the extent of Reiner's years of activism against the president and his administration.
As you guys know, I have never been one to change my tune about someone I previously criticized after their death, but I would usually avoid intentionally dumping on them, a practice Trump did not adopt in this case.
Trump characterized Reiner as “a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie actor and comedy star,” as well as stating that he suffered from TDS, which I thought was a bit much. Again, not defending Trump, but I do understand why he could not hold his tongue.
Massie responded, “Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered,” and then he dared anyone in the GOP to try to defend Trump’s post.
After Trump had Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro arrested, you almost expected that Massie would go on the attack based on his previous comments about the president, and he certainly did not disappoint.
Massie challenged the idea that Trump was truly America First, stating, “Wake up MAGA. VENEZUELA is not about drugs; it’s about OIL and REGIME CHANGE. This is not what we voted for.”
Now, I am all for an America First agenda, but you have to be fairly obtuse to believe we can live in a bubble in which the rest of the world does not impact this country's interests.
There are considerable resources in Venezuela, and if we can secure the rights to them, it will benefit this country in a major way, especially when you consider that Russia, China, and Iran have been cozying up to Venezuela as of late. This not only benefits the U.S., but it also hurts our enemies and adversaries, so, yeah, I would call Maduro's arrest an America First play.
The latest hit from Massie is something else with which I do not agree, that being his call for the release of the alleged J6 pipe bomber.
Massie stated, “The judge should release autistic J6 pipe bomb suspect Brian Cole Jr.”
He continued, “No credible motive, presents danger to no one, flimsy evidence, no priors, willing to wear a tracker under house arrest, family will vouch, and DOJ botched the legal work. Irreparable harm to him otherwise.”
The alleged conduct was literally an act of domestic terrorism, and Massie is suggesting that the man accused of it should be set free. Please, tell me how that is America First? I truly believe that Massie is now simply objecting for the sake of objecting, and I think that will wear thin on voters. There was a time not so long ago that I thought Massie would easily fend off a primary challenge, but that is not necessarily the case now.
