When Elon Musk and Donald Trump joined forces during the 2024 election season, the relationship was destined to blow up not long after the billionaire entrepreneur joined the administration.
The reality is that these are two alpha personalities not used to answering to anyone, and it was really a miracle it lasted as long as it did.
Thankfully, these two realized they can do more together than apart. After Musk posted a picture of himself having dinner with the president, the internet world blew up.
Had Musk not joined DOGE, I think he and Trump would have never missed a beat, but when Musk had to answer to the president, it changed everything.
We all saw how aggressive Musk was, prematurely making announcements about spending cuts, then Trump having to clean up after him, so the breakup was imminent.
I had predicted the fallout, but I just never expected it to be as bad as it was.
All of a sudden, Musk said he was going to start another party, and he was openly challenging Trump on pretty much every policy and legislative move.
Musk clearly wanted to end this rift, and he soon abandoned his desire to start a new party, which is when rumors started to surface that he was going to back JD Vance for president in 2028.
The thinking at the time was that if he could not rectify things with Trump, he would latch on to Vance and work to keep the White House in the GOP for the 2028 cycle.
When Vance was asked about the report, Vance denied they were talking, as did Musk, and he added, "My hope is that by the midterms, he's come back into the fold (sic).”
Trump has a soft spot for Vance, and I have zero doubt that the VP started to work on Trump to get him to ease up on his stance on Musk. It now appears as though it has paid off.
Saturday evening, the president, first lady, and Musk sat down for dinner at Mar-a-Lago, with Musk posting a picture of the three of them together on Sunday afternoon.
Musk captioned the picture, "Had a lovely dinner last night with @POTUS and @FLOTUS. 2026 is going to be amazing!"
This is a very good thing for the GOP because it needs Musk’s money to limit the damage that will take place in the 2026 midterm election, where history tells us Democrats will dominate.
If I were Musk, I would be concentrating all my efforts in the Senate in the hopes that the GOP can keep the majority there and at least block Democrats from controlling both chambers of Congress. If they can do that, it could save the 2028 election for the Republican Party.
