My “thought” today used a G.K. Chesterton quote as well as my interpretation of it, which was that turning the year over means nothing if you don’t change your attitude and work ethic. I asked our readers how they interpreted that quote, and Silas P. from West Virginia responded:

“Chesterton is reminding us that a change in the calendar is useless without a change in character. We spend so much time making superficial resolutions—lose ten pounds, save more money—but we rarely resolve to fix what is broken on the inside."

“If you carry the same bitterness, the same bad habits, and the same lack of integrity into 2026, you haven't actually started a new year; you are just dragging the old one out longer. A ‘new soul’ means repentance and a genuine commitment to being a better man than you were yesterday.”

I agree, Silas, so let’s put all the nonsense behind us and start anew. Easier said than done, however, because we know that our politicians are like elephants… they never forget, and they love reminding us all so they can keep poking that bear.
