The EU has been hammering social media companies and users alike of late, levying heavy fines and jail sentences.
For instance, X and Elon Musk were recently fined $140 million, and people are going to jail for posting online.
So, the Trump administration fired back, banning at least five EU officials from entering the country.
Earlier this month, Elon Musk was fined by the European Union (EU) $140 million for failing to comply with its regulations.
The government claimed that X was being misleading with its blue check mark system from verifying its users.
Musk had apparently disregarded all warnings by the commission, and commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier stated, "If you engage constructively with the Commission, we settle cases. If you do not, we take action."
Vice President JD Vance responded to the fine, "Rumors swirling that the EU commission will fine X hundreds of millions of dollars for not engaging in censorship. The EU should be supporting free speech not attacking American companies over garbage."
The crackdown is not just limited to platforms, either, as online trolls are literally being put in jail. For instance, in February, it was announced that police in Germany were raiding homes for people who were posting “hate” speech online.
Matthäus Fink, one of the state prosecutors, explained, "They don't think it was illegal. And they say, 'No, that's my free speech. And we say, 'No, you have free speech as well, but it is also has its limits.'"
Prosecutor Svenja Meininghaus also noted that reposting misinformation can also bring charges. Meininghaus stated, "The reader can't distinguish whether you just invented this or just reposted it. It's the same for us."
Workplaces here are being raided for illegal workers, and Democrats are losing their minds. In Germany, police are raiding homes and locking people up for reposting memes online, and Democrats are not saying a word.
All of this has led to the Trump administration banning European officials.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained, “For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organized efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose. The Trump Administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship. Today, [the State Department] will take steps to bar leading figures of the global censorship-industrial complex from entering the United States.”
Those who have been banned include former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton; Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate; Clare Melford, who is in charge of the Global Disinformation Index; and Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, leaders at the Germany-based HateAid, according to the New York Post.
Trump has not been afraid to throw down with our allies, so it will be interesting to see how this is received on the other side of the pond. Based on their initial reaction, however, I would say this is about to get ugly.
