There has been a huge movement among Democrats and progressives to push the United States government to recognize the Palestinian state.
This is something with which Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) has never agreed, as he has supported Israel faithfully from the outset of his time in office.
Now, however, Fetterman is being far more outspoken on the matter, completely breaking with his party and likely sealing his fate in terms of re-election.
There has always been pressure from Democrats to support a two-state solution, which goes directly against Israel’s longstanding position.
In September, that pressure was increased, as a group of Democrat senators introduced legislation to recognize a demilitarized Palestinian state.
At the time, Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) had stated, “We need to interrupt what’s happening. We need to have an immediate cease-fire, the hostages returned and an inundation of aid.”
He continued, “But we also need a vision for where we go so that 30 years from now, there is a peaceful and prosperous Middle East where we’re not caught in the grip of this conflict.”
International pressure also started to increase around the same time, as several outside nations started to endorse the two-state solution for peace in the Middle East.
This was coming from countries that are considered pro-Israel, something thatn surely did not sit well with President Donald Trump.
Among the countries that were advocating for a two-state solution were the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia.
It appeared that there was more support for such a solution here in the United States among Democrat voters (one poll had it at nearly 80%), so the pressure was being applied to force just such an outcome. Likely, the only thing saving this from becoming a reality is the fact that the GOP currently controls the White House and Congress.
Fetterman is not happy with how his party is treating Israel, and he is not holding his tongue, going directly against this growing movement on the left.
He stated, "It’s an absolute betrayal for Israel and for the worldwide Jewish community," as well as adding that he agreed with “virtually everything” that Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) had stated on the matter. That is something else I am sure will not sit well with Democrat leadership (Graham had stated that endorsing Palestinian statehood was akin to “rewarding killing Jews”).
Fetterman later added, "Whether it's France or Australia or any of these nations, our Western allies are now calling for a two-state solution when Hamas refuses to disarm and are actively trying to kill Jews. I can't imagine why anybody would do that at this point.”
I think I have made my point on this situation very clear over the last few years, and I will never support the idea of a two-state solution, as my allegiance on this front is fully behind Israel. They are our most important ally in the Middle East, and if we back off on this stance, we lose Israel forever.
