There have been rumors that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) married her brother floating around since 2016.
Omar reportedly provided paperwork meant to dispel the rumors, but Donald Trump just revived the speculation anew during a recent Pennsylvania rally.
To make matters worse for Omar, her ex has just resurfaced on social media.
Going back to the 2019 presidential campaign, Trump got this story about Omar all fired up while talking to reporters. He stated, “Well, there is a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it.”
In a fact check of the claim, the New York Times reported, "State records show that in 2009, Ms. Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who she said was a British citizen. They obtained a religious divorce in 2011, according to her timeline, and Mr. Elmi returned to England.”
The report continued, “She then reconciled with Mr. Hirsi and married him legally in January 2018, a month after she legally divorced from Mr. Elmi, according to The Associated Press. She and Mr. Hirsi have three children.”
The Minneapolis Star Tribune also reported that a reporter was shown documents by Omar from when she entered the United States, and Elmi’s name was reportedly not listed as among her siblings in that paperwork.
This week, as we noted above, Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania and suggested again that Omar had married her brother, which got the sleuths rolling, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded to a post that insisted she did indeed enter into such a marriage.
Cruz posted, "If this is true, then Omar faces criminal liability under three different statutes.”
All told, Omar has been married three times. She was first religiously married to Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002, then to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. After they got divorced, she formally married Hirsi again. They were divorced, and she married political aide Tim Mynett in 2020.
I have yet to see any credible evidence that supports the contention that Elmi is Omar's brother. There are a lot of doctored documents being used to support this claim, but I cannot, with a serious face, tell you that I think they are legitimate.
Elmi has now apparently resurfaced online, using the nickname “Dirty Dandy” on Instagram.
He is apparently living the high life in South Africa, so his timing is impeccable, at least if he wanted to create more problems for Omar.
It would not surprise me one bit if reporters reach out to him on this subject, but there is no telling what he will say when questioned.
As I noted above, I don’t buy into any theory until I see proof. If I believed that Omar had truly been married to her brother, you guys know I would report it. Quite honestly, I am surprised that Cruz made the comments he did without proof, because doing so is -- or I should say, used to be -- out of character for him. We will stay tuned to the reports to see if anything verifiable pops up.
