Today’s thought was about taking pride and enjoying a hard day’s work, and if that was still considered the American dream. Vernon R. from Tennessee responded:
“When I was coming up, finding a steady job and putting your back into it was just how you built a life. You didn't expect anyone to hand you anything, and taking pride in what you accomplished at the end of the day actually meant something. Now, it seems like we have a whole system set up that practically encourages folks to stay home or look for the easiest way out.
“You hear politicians talk about working a regular forty-hour week like it is some kind of punishment. The American dream hasn't gone anywhere, but it still requires elbow grease and determination. We really need to get back to teaching the younger generation that there is genuine honor in earning your own keep.”
I am laughing at a 40-hour workweek because I have not worked one of those in about four decades, if even then. I can’t remember the last time I did not put in at least 60 hours!
