I assumed that my “thought” of the day would be controversial in saying that the government should not be involved with keeping businesses in this country afloat. Survival of the fittest, I say, though I questioned whether I was being too harsh. As it turns out, most of you agreed with me. Today’s reader comment comes from Arnold B. of Wisconsin, who stated:
“You're not being harsh; you're speaking the language of common sense that has been forgotten in Washington. The free market is supposed to reward success and punish failure. When the government steps in to prop up a badly run company, it's doing two terrible things: first, it's rewarding failure with my tax dollars."
“Second, it's punishing the well-run businesses that have to compete against a zombie company that should have already gone under. It's the opposite of ‘survival of the fittest’; it's the survival of the politically connected.”
Rewarding failure… something far too many people in this country embrace. Thanks for the comment, Arnold!
